EXPO GUIDE WARNING

Expo Guide Warning

Expo Guide Warning!

Dear Exhibitor,

Some Fi, Hi and Ni exhibitors have been fraudulently targeted by a company called Expo Guide.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES SIGN ANY FORMS FROM THEM

Expo Guide/FairGuide.com/Construct Data Verlag target companies through legitimate exhibition guides. Their current activities cover companies throughout Europe, the Americas and Asia.

Expo Guide claims to offer online listing services. They use a form which resembles an organiser's free catalogue listing service, inviting exhibitors to complete the form for an entry in an on-line directory. Unsuspecting exhibitors who sign and return the form are then contracted into a three-year, non-retractable agreement, which could cost you a significant amount of money, with no foreseeable benefits.

Included in their group is debt collection agency Gravis Inkasso Gmbh and Swiss debt collection agency Premiumn Recovery AG (a Construct Data subsidiary) which works in partnership with the various guides to intimidate exhibitors into paying.

These publications have no connection with us or any of our events.

We strongly advise our exhibitors, and the entire exhibition community, to be most vigilant against this and similar organisations.

There are many so-called guides that mail deceptive contracts and then harass those who sign them in error for money. However the sheer scale and systematic way in which these guides attack exhibitors is outrageous.

Additional information on the Expo Guide, FairGuide and other Construct Data Verlag publications is available at: www.stopecg.org

Sustainability

The United Nations defines sustainability as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. In a commercial environment, we think of this as;
success today does not have to be at the expense of tomorrow
Sustainability is also the realisation that we have to live in harmony with the world around us: the resources that we consume, whether as individuals or corporations, only come from one place; our planet. It means an acceptance that these resources are not finite and that we need to create and maintain a balanced approach to how we operate our businesses.

Sustainability is not only about corporate social responsibility; it’s wider than that. It’s about strategic integration into how a business functions and co-exists with different elements of society and then how society exists with the environment. This interlinked relationship can be illustrated as;

or, to put it another way;
Economy Society Environment

Profit People Planet

A business can no longer produce goods or services without acknowledging that there are limits to the natural, social and economic systems upon which we all depend. The two main questions facing businesses are;
  • Internal – are we using resources faster than they can be replaced?
  • External – how does what we do impact upon others?

Sustainability isn’t just about ‘green issues’; whether or not you believe in man as the cause of climate change, you want a business that is successful in the long term, not just for the short term.  Sustainable processes are those that can be repeated over time, as well as developed and expanded.

If there are more people in the world, then more resources will be consumed – whether they are food, basic industrial raw materials or energy – regardless.  Awareness of this, itself assisted by the digital age and proliferation of information via the world wide web, means that we now appreciate that resources must be managed in a sustainable manner, both in their creation and utilisation or consumption.  Sustainability is not about stopping doing something. It is about understanding that the way in which we do things has to change, so that we can continue to do them for the future.

Being Sustainable means

Being inclusive.  It is not ‘A or B; do B at the expense of A’; – you can do B and A and doing B will make A even better.

Sharing.  Sharing knowledge and new ways of working with stakeholders. Sharing maximizes the impact and results

Longevity.  For example, our Fi Europe & Ni show is not just an event for 3 days – it is about what goes on before and after. It is a responsibility to the venues and communities where we do business; not just to turn up, consume resources and move on. It is also a responsibility to our shareholders and our staff.

Taking the next step.  The requirement to change and take the next step, as the world, economy, market and live event have all changed and so change is now a necessity and considered a social responsibility.

Why focus on sustainability?

Sustainable development has been defined as “an enduring, balanced approach to economic activity, environmental responsibility and social progress”.

Far from sustainability being just a ‘green’ issue, studies have shown that there have been shifts in the perspectives of investors and stakeholders in assessing the environmental and social impact of companies over different stakeholders.  Investors are developing criteria to ensure that their lending policies support emerging norms on social and environmental performance.

As a result of technology driving a greater visibility of issues and leading to increased transparency, there is greater scrutiny and concern about corporate practices related to sustainable development.  Companies are being asked to demonstrate the impact of their activities, particularly in relation to supply chains.

There is an opportunity for companies wishing to stake a claim to leadership on corporate responsibility issues by reviewing the extent that business activities are transparent and consistent with wider sustainability objectives.

Our success depends on commitment from all levels and functions.  In addition, it also depends on the system being flexible and integrated within the event management process and not just regarded as an ‘add-on’ component.

Sustainability tips for exhibitors

UBM Live recognises that our activities have important impacts on the environment, the economy and the community. As the organiser of Fi Europe we are proud to be one of the first event organiser’s who has received BS8901 accreditation for ‘Sustainable Event Management.

As exhibitors at Fi Europe, an integral part of our continued path towards sustainable event management is your own attempts to contribute to sustainability:

General tips
  • Send e-brochures by e-mail rather than sending hard copies.
  • Minimize the amount of printed material
  • Use recyclable paper packaging rather than plastic
  • Use public transport within the host city than taxis
  • Encourage the application of environmentally friendly principles in the stand design.
  • Encourage your stand builder or contractors to provide information on their environmental impact reduction.
  • Reduce environmental impact by working with design companies which already attend the show; as you can benefit from shared transport and labour.
  • Use biodegradable products for all cleaning activities.
  • Unplug electronic Items when they are not in use.
  • Buy environmental friendly furniture from sustainable suppliers
  • Motivate staff to travel by public transport, or cycle to work
Waste Management
  • Use waste materials, sourced from other industries as well as our own, to manufacture parts, features or other bespoke areas of the stand. For example, in the creation of bespoke furniture, these might come as waste material from the construction industry.
  • Reduce as much waste as you can on exhibition grounds.
Recycling
  • Use recycled paper where possible
  • se promotional tools or gifts that are recycled or from sustainable sources
  • Recycle disposable items
  • Use low-impact, renewable and recyclable products in the stand construction.
  • Reuse stands
  • Kitchen and catering waste should be collected and carefully sorted into plastics, glass, paper and garbage.
